quick question: favorite bath salt combos

11/9/2015

Experienced oilers were asked ...

I enjoy making my own bath salts and I want to try something new.  I have my tried and true mixtures ... but what are your favorites?

Here's their favorites!
  • Frankincense and Wild Orange
  • Serenity Calming Blend
  • Lavender and Wild Orange
  • White Fir + Lavender + Serenity Calming Blend + Wild Orange
  • Soothing Blend
  • Wintergreen
  • Lavender
  • Ylang ylang + Lavender
  • Lemongrass + Serenity Calming Blend + Balance  + Vetiver + Cedarwood. Great sleep!
  • Balance Grounding Blend + Wild Orange
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender + Peppermint (needless to say...very LITTLE peppermint!)
  • Lavender + Lemongrass + Peppermint
  • Spearmint + Eucalyptus = heavenly together
  • Spearmint + Lemongrass
  • Douglas Fir + Grapefruit
  • Aromatouch
  • Balance Grounding Blend
  • Breathe Respiratory Blend
  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus + Lime
  • Ginger + Lime
  • Serenity Calming Blend + Wild Orange
  • Lavender + Ylang Ylang
  • Lavender + Peppermint + Wild Orange
  • Melaleuca + Breathe Respiratory Blend
  • Citrus bliss
  • Joyful Blend
  • I toss all my empty bottles into a big jar of Epsom salts. The leaches out the remainder of the oils. I'm constantly adding and taking out salt and bottles. The smell is AMAZING. Seriously, it's the smell of everything and magical.

Want more info?  More details about making bath salts can be found here!  Enjoy!!

What a great gift a pretty jar of bath salts would make!

Here's a recipe in the graphic below, but honestly I usually just make my bath salts on-the-fly to meet whatever need I have at the moment (muscle support, relaxing, respiratory support, etc.).  I also usually use more oils than this calls for.

My recipe:  I take a cup of Epsom Salts (sometimes I add Baking Soda, sometimes I don't) and drop whatever oils I want into the cup of salt.  I usually use 4 - 6 drops to one cup of salts..  Easy!

quick question: getting & staying asleep

11/7/2015

Help!  I can get to sleep at night okay most nights, but I wake up at least two - three times during the night.  What oils can help you go to sleep and STAY asleep?

Here's some ideas from several experienced oilers ...
  • Serenity Calming Blend + Clary Calm Women's Monthly Blend -- diffuse and also apply to wrists and back of neck.
  • Frankincense on big toes; Lavender in diffuser
  • Our supplements plus a blend of Serenity Calming Blend + Vetiver + Cedarwood topped off with FCO in a rollerball.  Diffuse Breathe Respiratory Blend + Serenity Calming Blend, also.
  • Keep a bottle of Wild Orange on your night stand.  Inhale when you wake up
  • Serenity Calming Blend on big toes and wrists and Lavender on wrists and bottom of feet.
  • Serenity Calming Blend on feet and diffuse Cedarwood + Vetiver + Lavender.
  • Lemongrass + Serenity Calming Blend + Balance Grounding Blend + Vetiver + Cedarwood

And here's our routine ...

For Shelby (10 years old) ...
Arborvitae + Breathe Respiratory Blend + Serenity Calming Blend in the diffuser; Serenity Calming Blend on her feet and back of neck

For me ...
Vetiver + Wild Orange + Bergamot in the diffuser; Wintergreen first and then Deep Blue Soothing Blend Rub on my shoulders, legs and feet; Breathe Vapor Stick around my nose, cheeks and neck. Sometime 3 drops of Lavender in a Veggie Cap.  I have to say that taking our supplements have also helped me sleep better at night and have more energy during the day.

yucky stinky stuff

11/6/2015

Stinky yucky stuff.  Sooner or later, you have something in your home you need to deal with.  I will give you a break by not listing the obvious.  For me, lately, it's involved my move to my little 1946-era house and stressed cats.

Quick fix #1 -- stinky closets

The house I bought was built in 1946 and was nicely renovated in 2007. But it had two stinky closets. For some reason these two closets -- a pantry and a linen closet -- had that stinky old-house smell. In the old days I would have doused them with chemicals and they still would smell bad.

So here's what I did: I dripped about 6 drops of Cleansing Blend around the bottom of each closet three days ago. The next day I did Peppermint. The next day I did Rosemary. Guess what? They smell great now! No "old musty house" smell at all!

I will refresh at times as needed with Lavender in the linen closet and Peppermint in the pantry.

Note:  The bottoms of the closets are painted plywood which I wasn't worried about the oils messing up.  In fact, I wanted the oils to soak in if they would. If you are concerned about the finish, you could place oils into a glass bowl and set inside the closet or onto cotton balls.

Another great idea -- leave your empty essential oil bottles in drawers and cabinets.  Enough of the scent will be left to leave a nice aroma in these confined places.

PictureRicky ponders the meaning of life
Quick fix #2 -- Stinky cats

My house came with two feral cats who like to hang out in my front yard, which triggers territorial spraying in my normally well-behaved neutered male cat, Ricky.  What is "spraying"?  It's a small amount of powerfully scented urine, usually sprayed on vertical surfaces. That's a clinical way of saying, "Good God, I'm moving to Alaska to get away from that awful smell!".

He's only done it once, but once is enough.

I had to come up with a one-two punch. So I made two room sprays. One: to kill the smell.  Two: to calm the cat.

Here's how to make a DIY Room Spray

Basic recipe -- you'll need:
  • Glass spray bottles.  You can buy them on Amazon. I like 4 oz size.
  • Distilled water -- spray will last longer if you use distilled water -- about 3 oz
  • Witch hazel -- helps oils to stay dispersed in the water -- about 1/2 oz -- still a good idea to shake the bottle before spraying
  • Essential oils -- 10 - 30 drops (or to your liking)

Kill the smell spray -- I simply used Purify Cleansing Blend as the oil in the above recipe.  I sprayed it all over the room, including the lower walls and window sills. It did this three times over the course of a couple of hours. Poof - bad smell gone!

Calming Mist -- I used Lavender as the essential oil in the recipe and sprayed it all over the room.

I also put one drop of Lavender in my hand plus about 10 drops of FCO (Fractionated Coconut Oil) and rubbed it on Ricky's back to provide calming comfort.

So far, so good -- he hasn't sprayed in several days! Success!
