Stress takes many forms in our lives, from the momentary stress of getting through that bad rush-hour traffic to the stress of planning an event or going through a major life change. Did you know that there are many essential oils you can use to find relief?

Tips for using oils for emotional well-being can be found here.  How essential oils effect our brain can can found here.

Here are just a few of my favorite stress-tested tried-and-true essential oils ...
Picture

Frankincense:
Often called the “king of oils, ” Frankincense promotes feelings of peace and overall wellness when used aromatically, while topical and internal uses provide modern health benefits. When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness.

Uses
  • Can be applied to the bottoms of feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.  Also ...
  • Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of gardening for a warming and soothing effect.
  • Helps reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.
  • Take one to two drops in a veggie capsule to support healthy cellular function.*

Picture
Hawaiian Sandalwood:
From a renewable source in Hawaii, doTERRA’s amazing Sandalwood essential oil delivers a variety of benefits, including smoothing skin and enhancing moods. With thousands of years of documented use, this oil has a high value to many users. Hawaiian Sandalwood has a rich, sweet, woody aroma that instills calmness and well-being, making it a perfect oil to incorporate into massage or aromatherapy. Sandalwood is very soothing and beneficial to the skin, making it highly sought after in body and skin care products. Hawaiian Sandalwood can reduce the appearance of skin imperfections while providing an overall youthful-looking complexion. In addition to being soothing and beneficial to the skin, Hawaiian Sandalwood provides these same effects to mood, helping to lessen tension and promote emotional well-being.

Uses
  • Diffuse or apply to the neck and shoulders at bedtime for a restful night’s sleep.
  • Add 1–2 drops to a hot bath to promote relaxation and lessen tension.
  • Use during meditation because of its grounding and uplifting properties.
  • Add 1–2 drops PLUS Frankincense to your favorite moisturizer (especially at night) for a double-effect of promoting relaxation and smooth, glowing skin.

Picture
Lavender:
Lavender is often considered a must-have oil to keep on hand at all times due to its versatile uses, including calming and relaxing properties that promote peaceful sleep and ease feelings of tension.

We are better able to handle stress when we’ve had enough sleep, and this calming oil is a common go-to for a soothing night’s rest.

Uses
  • Add a few drops of Lavender to your diffuser and to pillows, bedding, or bottoms of feet at bedtime.
  • Take internally to reduce anxious feelings. Also ...
  • Keep a bottle of Lavender on hand to soothe occasional skin irritations.
  • Freshen your linen closet, mattress, car, or the air by combining Lavender with water in a spray bottle.
  • Use in cooking to soften citrus flavors and add a flavorful twist to marinades, baked goods, and desserts.

Picture
Elevation:
As the name suggests, Elevation is an invigorating combination of essential oils that blends euphoric scents to elevate your mood, promote feelings of confidence, and increase your energy.

This blend is perfect to put in a bath after a long day. To make sure the oil gets well dispersed, also add a teaspoon of honey, vegetable oil, or whole milk and add the oil just before stepping in. (This prevents the oils from evaporating before you get in.)  Add 1 cup of Epsom Salts, if desired, for soothing comfort to tired muscles.

Uses
  • Diffuse Elevation to promote feelings of self-worth while also helping to lessen feelings of stress.
  • Diffuse Elevation in the mornings before waking kids to create a positive and energized mood.

Whether you're in a regular ed classroom or in a special needs environment, sometimes teachers (even home school teachers!) need a little extra oomph.  As an occasional support, or perhaps in a full-time position, these essential oils are invaluable. I think of these ten as "special forces" oils with very specific uses!

(Note:  please see the first post in this series for my list of three must-have "core" oils for classrooms.)

PictureSpruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile make up this blend
Balance Grounding Blend:  The warm, woody fragrance of grounding blend creates a calming environment that promotes tranquility and balance.
  • Classroom use: Grounding Blend a great oil for anger, outbursts, stress and feelings of anxiousness.  You can diffuse it alone or try with Calming Blend for extra calming power. A good classroom blend might be:  3 drops Peppermint + 3 drops Wild Orange + 2 drops Grounding Blend..

Picturethis blend features Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Ravensara
Breathe Respiratory Blend:  Respiratory blend is the perfect combination of oils to promote clear breathing.
  • Classroom use: To help maintain clear airways when environmental threats are high, you can diffuse this blend alone or add a couple of drops of this oil to your classroom blend.

Picturewild orange, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, tangerine, and clementine with a hint of vanilla combines to make a lovely "creamsicle" aroma

Citrus Bliss Invigorating Blend:  Invigorating blend merges the benefits of several citrus essential oils.
  • Classroom use:  Elevating mood and reducing stress, calming nervous tension. This blend also has natural, potent compounds with great air cleansing properties. Diffuse alone or add to other oils.  Invigorating Blend + Grounding Blend can be a terrific blend for emotional support that is grounding and uplifting and also has air-cleaning properties due to the citrus oils.

PictureLabdanum flower is pictured above and is featured in this blend that also includes patchouli, ylang ylang, amyris bark, sandalwood, rose, osmanthis and frankincense
Console Comforting Blend:  Comforting Blend is one of our emotional aromatherapy blends.  It has a sweet, musky, and floral aroma and will help with feelings of sadness, hopelessness or stress.
  • Classroom use:  If you have a child dealing with emotional trauma of any kind, sadness, or feelings of anxiousness, diffuse Comforting Blend.   Grounding Blend + Comforting Blend is a nice emotional support blend.  Who doesn’t need consoling and balancing?

Picture
Frankincense:  Renowned as one of the most prized and precious essential oils, Frankincense has extraordinary internal and external health benefits. It promotes cellular health and helps maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Classroom use:  If you have a child in your class who needs extra support for the brain -- for any reason -- then I highly recommend the use of 1-2 drops of Frankincense in your diffuser mix to support brain health.

Picture
Lavender:  Lavender is widely used and acknowledged for its calming and relaxing qualities; it is frequently used to soothe skin irritations, reduce muscle tension, and promote a restful night’s sleep.
  • Classroom use:  Diffuse alone or add to other oils to add an extra element of calm and peace.

PictureYlang ylang flow is featured in this blend of Vetiver Root, Lavender Flower, Ylang Ylang Flower, Frankincense Resin, Clary Sage Flower, Marjoram Leaf, Labdanum Leaf/Stalk, Spearmint Herb

Peace Reassuring Blend:  Another emotional aromatherapy blend, Reassuring Blend will help with feelings of being overwhelmed and afraid.  Reassuring Blend is a positive mixture of floral and mint essential oils.
  • Classroom use:  If you’ve ever heard of the famous “Peaceful Child” blend (developed by a mom of an ASD child), this is a pretty close approximation of that recipe. Diffuse alone or add to other oils

PictureSweet marjoram is featured in this blend of lavender, roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood and vanilla bean
Serenity Calming Blend:  Calming Blend is a blend of essential oils with known calming properties which create a sense of well-being and relaxation.
  • Classroom use:  A friend’s go-to blend for her son is Peppermint + Wild Orange + Calming Blend.  This might end up being your favorite, too!  Great for helping to calm hyperactivity and feelings of excitement, stress and feelings of anxiousness.

Picturevetiver is a grassy plant -- the essential oil comes from the root of the plant and is one of the most complex essential oils, containing almost 1000 different compounds
Vetiver:  Used extensively in perfumes as a base note, vetiver’s woody, earthy scent complements many other essential oils. Vetiver also has many therapeutic uses, including antioxidant and relaxation properties.
  • Classroom use:  Vetiver is widely known to help calm the mind and many moms reach for this oil to help support their children who have a hard time focusing, have speech issues, need help channeling their energy to one task and more. Diffuse with other oils.  A nice classroom blend for your class might be:  Wild Orange + Peppermint + Vetiver or Grounding Blend + Calming Blend + Vetiver.

essential affirmations

#31 drops of oil – October 28

Whether the holiday season (or life...) overwhelms you occasionally, or leaves you feeling blah, essential oils can uplift your mood – centering, calming, elevating – when you need it.

Life is full of ups and downs.  "Seasons" people like to call them.  That's a nice way of remembering that nothing lasts forever.  Good follows bad follows good. Essential oils don't make the bad times disappear of course, but they are a healing, positive coping mechanism.  And much healthier than tucking in to that half gallon of ice cream!

Our new Emotions Aromatherapy Kit is amazing -- love Every. Single. One. I diffuse them, add them to an unscented lotion, wear on pulse points as perfume and add a drop to my aromatherapy necklace -- the aroma for each is wildly different, very rich and complex.

They remind me to stay in the moment, pray and ponder one of my go-to's like "God is working in this situation."

Aroma is a powerful emotional trigger. Use that power for the good and positive!

Tip # 28 – Find your favorite diffusing mix and an affirmation to say when times are tough.

(And who doesn't love a little Stuart Smalley??)

how essential oils affect mood

10/12/2015

Picture
#31 days – October 12

It’s not called “Aromatherapy” for nothin’, folks.  There’s numerous reasons why essential oils are used to affect our moods and emotions.

Here’s a nutshell version from the Essential Oil Desk Reference, 4th Edition:

“When we inhale the fragrance of an essential oil, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they’re registered by the nerves of the olfactory membranes in the nose lining. The odor molecules stimulate this lining of nerve cells and trigger electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits the impulses to the amygdala - where emotional memories are stored - and to other parts of the limbic system of the brain.

Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control memory [and more], essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects
… Olfactory responses to odors induce the brain to stimulate the release of hormones and neurochemicals that in turn alter the body’s physiology and behavior.”
That’s a mouthful, right?  And here’s another crazy little factoid:  There are smell receptors in every organ of your body. Weird.

All that’s to say this:  The teensy chemical molecules that compose pure and complex essential oils have the capacity to reach into your brain and other organs to trigger both emotional and physical reactions.

The ability of essential oils to pass into our bloodstream through all three pathways and affect our bodies once again points out the importance of only using the highest quality – tested and proven safe, pure and potent – essential oils.

You can read several more blog posts about essential oils and their effect on moods and emotions here.

Tip # 12:  Diffuse essential oils during your quiet time. Personally, I love combining essential oils (diffusing them) while I’m doing my Bible study.  They add a layer of peace, beauty and depth to my time of meditation.  Two favorites to diffuse: Balance Grounding Blend + Elevation Joyful Blend or our new Forgive Renewing Blend. Amazing.  Try it in your own time of personal reflection, prayer, Bible study or even yoga -- and see what happens!

#31 drops of oil – October 11

Another common question … “My mood and my body is all out of whack during my cycle.  Can essential oils help?”

Monthly cycles can be times of heightened emotions and various physical manifestations.  Need I say more?

There are many essential oils with a history of (in some of my friends -- PROFOUNDLY) helping to ease these symptoms.  A friend of mine uses this protocol during that time of the month and it has made a huge impact on the quality of her life (and her family’s!) …
  • Clary Calm Monthly Blend for Women – roll over lower abdomen and lower back for healthy hormone support
  • Whisper Blend for Women – use on pulse points, also for hormonal support
  • Immortelle Anti-Aging Blend – roll over forehead and temples (really use it all over your face since it’s a facial serum!)  for tension and discomfort

These oils are also found to be helpful by many:
  • Balance Grounding Blend
  • Serenity Calming Blend
  • PastTense Tension Blend
  • Clary Sage
These can be diluted and applied topically on pulse points and lower abdomen.  They can also be diffused for a good mood-lifting effect.

Highly recommended by health professionals:
  • our LifeLong Vitality supplement pack and
  • Women's Bone Nutrient and Phytoestrogen

Tip #11:  Calm and comfort your mind and body during monthly cycles with essential oils and other doTERRA products.

Here are two recipes that many women have found to be very helpful:
Diffuse: 2 drops each of Serenity, Wild Orange and Balance
.
Topical:  Make up a 10ml rollerball using about 18 drops each of Serenity, Lavender, Citrus Bliss and Balance, plus 4 drops of Wild Orange.  Fill the rest of the bottle up with FCO and use as needed.

essential oils for sleepy-time

#31 drops of oil – October 10

Want to know the #1 question I get?

“What essential oils can help me get a more restful night’s sleep?”  Sleep – or lack of it – is a huge problem for many people.

There is no exact answer to which essential oils YOU should use, because everyone’s chemistry is so different.  Many essential oils are well-known for their calming effects.  And some of these listed below may be new to you, but are equally effective!

How to use them?
  • Try them one at a time and/or in combos of two or three oils.
  • Place four - six drops in an ultrasonic diffuser and diffuse all night.  Sometimes it's helpful to have a calming before-bed blend to diffuse the last couple of hours before bed and also have an over-night blend.
  • Rub onto your feet (weird -- but the big toe is a great spot for sleep!).   Especially nice if you have a partner to massage your weary feet -- a very nice night-time routine!  Back of neck and wrists are good places to apply as well.
  • Make a pillow spray of your favorites or simply place a drop or two on your pillow.
  • Many of these are very good made into a hot tea -- Chamomile, Lavender and Bergamot in particular.  Add to plain hot water or to herbal tea.
  • Two - four drops of Lavender in a capsule helps many people get more restful sleep.
  • Juniper Berry helps many children who experience night terrors or nightmares. Experiment with Lavender for nightmares, sometimes it helps, sometimes not.
  • You may experience more vivid dreams with some oils (I don't, but I've read about this).  This is a good thing as you dream in good, deep REM-level sleep!

Here is a list of sleep-encouraging essential oils and blends:
  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Serenity Calming Blend
  • Balance Grounding Blend
  • Peace Reassuring Blend
  • Console Comforting Blend
  • Vetiver
  • Cedarwood
  • Wild Orange
  • Breathe
  • Frankincense
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Roman Chamomile

Four drops Wild Orange + three drops Vetiver in my diffuser knocks me out – the best sleep I’ve gotten in years!  If I have a lot on my mind and/or am dealing with occasional seasonal issues, I put 2 - 4 drops of Lavender in a Veggie Cap and take it before bed.  Sometimes I make sleepy-time tea by adding a drop or two of Chamomile (or Lavender or Bergamot) to a cup of hot water or herbal tea, sweetened to taste with honey or stevia about 30 minutes before going to bed.

I’d say 75% of the people I’ve met say that Lavender or a combo with Lavender does it for them.  It's fun to experiment until you find a single oil or combo that works for you.

Tip # 10:  Find your own “sleepy-time” blend to diffuse before bed and while sleeping to support more restful sleep.
Sweet dreams!

reach for your oils first!

You know how you have friends that you rely on for certain situations?  Friends you call when you're just in the mood for a distracting chat.  Friends to pick you up off the floor when you're in a sad puddle.  Friends that challenge you. Friends that comfort. Fun friends.  Serious-minded friends.  Wise friends.  Even friends with chicken pox -- reference, anyone?

Okay, you get it.

Maybe there's over-lap, too. The same friend can bring you chicken soup when you've got a cold and also watch When Harry Met Sally with you, even if you don't look nearly as adorable as Meg-in-the-midst-of--a-crying-jag.

Once you get to know them, oils are like that, too.

They can help on a physical level.  Or an emotional level.  Or both.

But they key is just that -- getting to know them.  Calling on them when you need help.  Maybe doing a little research, but mostly, just using them.  Spending time with them.  Reaching for them -- a healthy alternative -- instead of other alternatives that are on the market .  Like calling a more grounded friend instead of hitting up the Mayfield Chocolate ice cream.  Again.

The thing is with oils, your relationship develops over time as you get to know them better.  Some of it you learn through research, but some of it becomes ... instinctive.

Okay, let's go ahead and dive into the spooky oil-nerd deep end.

Here's a story: I have been drawn to Bergamot lately.  I love diffusing it and even adding it to other well-loved blends to take it up a notch.  I love adding it to my hot tea.  I love putting it -- either alone or even better with a drop of Peppermint and sometimes Whisper -- in my aromatherapy necklace.  I love wearing it as a perfume.

I loved the smell and used it totally for the aroma, not for any therapeutic benefits. I love this oil. Such a great-smelling, calming and comforting oil. Seriously. I want to knit a Bergamot afghan, curl up in it and read a great book.

I really didn't know much about it.  But then I noticed it helped with my seasonal threats and I got curious.

So I started reading about Bergamot. It is a unique citrus fruit and has been used for years for its calming and yet uplifting properties to help with stress, anxious feelings and feelings of sadness.  A doctor (she's both a biochemist and a clinical psychologist) I was reading the other day highly recommended Bergamot and Frankincense together to "reset the brain" after a time of extreme stress.

Let's just leave it this:  the past decade has been a time of pretty extreme stress for me.

My body-soul-mind-spirit knew I needed Bergamot.  I just knew it smelled good.  Neat how that works out, yes?

Moral of the story:  Spend time with your oils.  Do a little research, but mostly, just give them a shot.  Reach for them *first* instead of your toxic frenemies.

This is the key to kicking the synthetic habit and getting your health back on track in a natural, holistic way.

Looking to make some new friends and get away from your old toxic crowd?  Start here!

flying the wild orange express

I just made a trip to Utah to learn more about our oils. Our plane had boarded and I was seated, waiting on the plane to take off.  A young woman in the row behind me was on the phone with her mom.  The girl was openly weeping and I was very concerned about her.  We'd had a somewhat rough flight to Denver from Atlanta, the plane shuddering and jolting a little as we passed through what the mild-mannered pilot called "a bit of weather."

The young lady was alone and frightened.  I felt terrible for her.  And a little camaraderie, too. Flying is not my favorite thing, either.  In fact I found myself, usually a pretty calm person, having somewhat irrational worries and feeling claustrophobic on the flight to Denver.  "What if I throw up?"  "What if I throw up and can't STOP throwing up?"  "What if I go screaming down the aisle?"  "What is Death?"  "What if the plane is suddenly filled with snakes?  And finally ... "In the name of all things holy, WHERE is Samuel L. Jackson when you NEED him??"

Okay, maybe totally irrational.  I relied heavily on my oils to get me through that flight.

When she got off the phone with her mom, I leaned over the seat (she was still quietly sniffing) and asked if she was okay.  We talked a while and commiserated about the flight.  After a while I asked her if she'd ever tried essential oils and gave her a bottle of our Wild Orange.  I told her to sniff it from the bottle or put a drop or two in her palms, rub together and breathe it in. She was thrilled and took the bottle, happily.

As we progressed through the final leg of the trip from Denver to Salt Lake City, we'd occasionally hit a rough patch.  Several times through the flight I caught a slight whiff of citrus.

As we de-planed in Salt Lake, she was all smiles.  I asked her if the Wild Orange helped, although I really already knew the answer.  She loved it -- said it really helped a lot and she'll never fly again without Wild Orange.

Wild Orange is one of many oils that are calming.  It's our top recommendation, actually.  I know people who won't go anywhere without their Wild Orange to help with anxious feelings and even with high stress situations!

Love that.  Simple. Effective.  Smells good.
