This is a small thing, but when un-elected bureaucrats can take ownership of what it means to offer healing and hope, what is next?

Government run amok ...

Thanks to our power-and-control-hungry government,  I have to censor my own Facebook page and blog.  I have to use what they are calling "creative" speech.  This is to distinguish it from free speech -- or heck, just plain ordinary honest straightforward speech --  because that just doesn't exist anymore.

I've never made one single false claim about essential oils. I don't know anyone who has -- at least no one associated with doTERRA.

And yet, I'm being forced to speak in code.  Riddles.  Lawyer-speak.  Circuitous, vague and possibly shady-sounding.  I mean, wouldn't a reasonable person ask: If she means something, why can't she say it right out-loud?  If something is true, why can't we speak it?

We haven't made false claims, but apparently we have made what the FDA calls "drug claims".  In 2015 in America we can't say things like this:  I take a drop of ______________  and rub it _________ to help with_____________.

So I'm not.  I'm not saying those things.  Even if they are true and I've personally experienced helpful effects or my friends have, I can't say them.  Please -- to keep the jack-booted Feds from my door (only a slight exaggeration) try to read my code-language and if I ever slip up and say that essential oils have any benefit besides smelling good, just pretend that that you didn't read it here.  Thank you.

Even in private Facebook groups, we are not to say these things.  Even in PRIVATE groups. PRIVATE.  Big Brother is watching and has algorithms and computery stuff to monitor Every. Single.  Thing.  You.  Do.

I'm not a doctor. I've never claimed to be one.  I'm a mom and grandmom.  I've read and researched and always encourage others to do the same.  I tell my stories, share ways these oils have helped me and my friends.  I try, with integrity and honesty, to make a clear case for why you might want to consider adding essential oils to your own arsenal -- a free choice, made by an educated consumer.

Is this really such a dangerous thing?

I'll tell you this:  Big Pharma must be scared to death of the power of essential oils to bring out the big guns and try to shut us down.

Wonder why?

Well, I can't tell you because then it would seem that I'm drawing a parallel between essential oils and synthetic medication (I've already had to greatly censor this post or I run the risk of losing my small business).

You can do your own research though.  It's not hard to figure out when you see the billions of dollars at stake.

So I'll be speaking in code.  I'm being forced to say "seasonal" or "environmental threats";  "threats" or "supports proper immune function"; "supports proper digestion".  I'll use proper, government-approved words.

Because God forbid we speak one word -- or maybe even have a thought inside our own private little heads -- that is not Government Approved.

So get out your magic decoder  ring and learn about essential oils!  Don't have one?  Oh well, Big Pharma has a pill for that.

Picture
So.  My apologies.  I'm not being cagey in the future when I write about our oils.  I'm being an American small-business owner simply trying to guide others toward a healthy and natural wellness path -- against near-impossible odds.

And just one last thing to file under the "law of unintended consequences" (although this probably was foreseen and completed intended):  I just read a post from a moderator of an "autism & oils" Facebook group with 8,000 members. This is a group that supports families dealing with autism and doesn't endorse any specific brand of essential oil -- just mom-to-mom support, ideas, "what works for us" advice. The moderator is having to shut the group down because of our lovely lovely government -- Voldemort as she very rightly names this particular agency. This group isn't selling oils or endorsing any brand -- just helping. She is heart-broken and leaves thousands of families very alone and upset.

This is so wrong.

Well done! I'm a grandmother, too! Can you imagine our parents not being able to say, "castor oil cures constipation, or "Take this.....it'll cure whatever ails you!" ??? What next? I tell everyone I meet that Red Delicious apples cured my heartburn and GERD. Will the government start censoring apple growers?! Ugh!

Our government is shameless and corrupt to its core. I wouldn't put anything past them if it takes power and choice away from citizens and puts in the hands who "know what's good for us". Scary.

It's not "big pharma" that got the FDA involved. It was aromatherapists in the essential oil community who were frustrated at the increasing level of essential oil injuries caused by following unsafe recommendations made by the distributors and others. They were seeing multiple injuries and emergency room visits due to using essential oils in unsafe ways. As the companies refused to listen, they took the next step and contacted the FDA.

Pharmaceutical companies don't care about the essential oil world! In fact, it is in their best monetary interests to keep the unsafe recommendations going by companies so that more people have to go to the hospital and use more prescriptions to recover.

People in the essential oil community need to pay closer attention to why the FDA got involved so that the community can thrive the way it should. If you continue to point fingers at "big pharma" instead of looking at the real issues, things will only get worse.

Hey Shannon, thanks for your response. A couple of things:

1 -- To make an analogy -- Cars are potentially lethal. Let's ban all cars because if they are improperly used, then they are a danger.

2 -- I've looked up morbidity and mortality reports for essential oils. I can't find any. If this was a widespread problem, seems like someone besides aromatherapists would be gathering data on it.

I'm more of a "why can't we be reasonable and all get along" type person, so really, although I knew about the disgruntled nature of aromatherapists and their penchant for being wildly negative due to their not-current-with-the-science training and maybe some weird inherent mean thing about being an aromatherapist -- seems like you'd all be happier people! -- I didn't want to point fingers.

But okay, here's the only data I could find -- anecdotal data gathered by, you guessed it, aromatherapists. 34 "injuries" in 2014. None of them serious enough to require hospitalization. Eleven went to a doctor. Injuries ranged from rashes, flatulence and burning sensations to GI upset. One had cognitive dysfunction (something that should be deeply investigated as I have a feeling this condition is much more widespread in the aromatherapist population).

http://www.atlanticinstitute.com/injury-report-2014/

and this one:

http://aromatherapyunited.org/injury-reports/injury-reports-feb-2015/

The 2015 report lists 83 injuries resulting in 29 doctor visits. A serious reaction involved several undiluted drops applied to a baby and the child had a seizure. If this is true, this is tragic and could have been avoided by education and proper use of the oil.

People can be oddly and vehemently negative over a crazy gamut of issues. They can also just be plain wrong ... but ... you're entitled to your opinion.

Here's the truth though: The data supports essential oils, properly used, are extremely safe and very effective.

Even though they are natural, they are very potent. Everyone I know tries to impart useful information to consumers about how to use their oils. It's not rocket-science. It's really hard to screw up and hurt yourself with oils. But it can be done.

(Dilute, people, always dilute!)

If you really think that Big Pharma is thrilled by the prospect of TWO people turning to medication in 2014 due to essential oil use and EIGHT in 2015 (according to your reports) then you are either very naive or just an EO hater (again, a position I don't understand, but you're entitled).

Truth is the FDA is coming after all holistic"not-government-approved" therapies. If you don't think aromatherapists and the like (herbalists, etc) are on the radar for (at best) control and (at worst) destruction, then I have some Oil of Unicorn Horn for you, guaranteed to raise the dead. Seriously.

... and about that child who had a seizure (taking into account this is a self-reported story) -- having had some experience with a medically fragile child who has seizures so this is something I take very seriously -- it is likely as not that this was a febrile seizure. But in any case, the report states, thank God, that the child "returned to normal."

The silly thing about this comment is it is being made without proper information. The injuries referred to have been compiled by the aromatherapy industry without any scientific research behind the claims individuals submitted. The sad thing is that with the thousands of research being completed by Universities and Research Centers across this nation and the world, it will be the aromatherapist embarrassed in the end. And even sadder it the concerted effort by their industry will come back to their home soon.

agreed!! They are terribly misguided and I'm not sure why, besides jealousy, that this is now their thing. But it will hurt them in the end.

all we can do is 1 - not give up, 2 - not give them reasons to pursue this witch-hunt (altho I think they don't need reasons) and 3 - get involved as concerned citizens and voters -- contact your Congressman and Senators!

Shannon please take off the blinders. More and more drs are turning to alternative answers and leaving the big pharmacies behind. It also seems unlikely that aromatherapists would begin a war upon themselves. Please give a reference to your information so that it seems more than just a rant. Government is constantly in personal and private business and taking care of my health as i see fit should always be my decision not the governments. This is the same govt that approves the use of round up, and GMO plants and seeds and these are the very thing that is making everyone sick in the first place. It is always a money thing dont be fooled

yes, too true. I'm certain the end-game in this is to shut us down -- all of us in the wellness and holistic field. It's all about control. And money.

I rarely ever reply to these types of conversations but I feel it's necessary to urge people to read Kevin Trudeau's book called Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About. It will be an eye opener for those that don't believe the government is corrupt. It's all about money people and who do you honestly think is the biggest money backers for these politicians??? This book was written long before Essential Oils were as popular as they are now, it's about the closing down companies looking for natural cures to help us all, we are talking about herbs, minerals and simple vitamins. It's sad... really sad! Please read it!

They are also trying to regulate the homemade soap industry. I have a son who is allergic to all commercial brands of soap, I've tried prescription soaps and cremes after the fact to help his reaction. I did find a homemade soap that he's used for 4 years now and it works. I have to drive an hour to buy it. When I do I buy many bars of it!!! Now we have converted our whole household use of these homemade soaps...
"Big pharma" is owned by the same companies that make everything from cereal to cleaners (soaps) to medications and candy.. They have become conglomerates. Look it up...

I'm a capitalist to the core. But this cronie capitalism is so corrupt. It's crazy. Big pharma and the FDA are in bed together and the consumer is the loser. It's all about money and control. But mostly money. I'm sorry your son's health will be affected, Shirley.
