essential oils go to school

I've had some teacher friends ask me about using essential oils in their classrooms.  Essential oils can be such a tremendous value in a classroom!  Here's my thoughts...

Essential oils can help with:
  • Energy and focus
  • Mood and stress
  • Overall health and immunity
  • Cleansing the air
  • Behavior

As oils are used in a classroom with students, teachers may have to experiment, since every child is unique (and each day is unique too!).  Also keep in mind that sometimes children with special needs respond in atypical ways.

Diffusing is a very effective tool to use in a classroom.  The closer the diffuser is to the children, the better.  Teachers may find it helpful, as they use and learn about essential oils, to use some oils in the mornings and others in the afternoon.  You can slightly under-fill the diffuser, again, as you learn and grow comfortable with the oils, to adjust the time that you can refill and reboot with a different blend customized for your classroom.

In this post, I'll cover the three core oils I recommend. In part two, I'll discuss other helpful essential oils.

I cannot over-emphasize the importance of using pure, tested, graded therapeutic essential oils.  A recent test of cheap oils sold at Walmart showed that the oils in question were diluted with synthetics and were not even the oil they claimed to be!!  Shame on them.  Do not expect good results with cheap and impure oils.  They may say "pure" or "natural" as the Walmart oils did, but unless you know and control the supplier, your can't know if you have the real deal.  I ONLY trust one brand.

For classroom use, I recommend, at minimum, these three “core” oils:  Peppermint, Wild Orange and OnGuard Protective Blend.  Let me give you an overview of these.

Picture
Peppermint:  our peppermint oil is pure and steam-distilled from the peppermint plant and contains a high percentage of menthol which gives it therapeutic value to alleviate stomach upset, relieve tension, invigorate the mind, and promote healthy respiratory function.

Wild Orange:
Wild orange oil is cold-pressed from the orange peel and has an energizing and revitalizing aroma. It is also commonly used as an effective tool for uplifting mood, a powerful cleansing agent, and as a source of antioxidants.

OnGuard Protective blend:   contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils due to their ability to support healthy immune function and protect against environmental threats.

For most teachers these oils will be their go-to oils.

Typical classroom blend:  3 drops Peppermint + 3 drops Wild Orange.  Smells so great!  This should provide students with a boost in mood, focus and attention, without making them hyper. Because of the citrus oil, this mix will also be cleansing to the air.

If there is something going around the school, Protective Blend should be diffused for extra cleansing to the environment and to boost immunity.  You can diffuse Protective Blend alone or it to your classroom blend -- 3 drops Peppermint + 3 drops Wild Orange + 2 drops OnGuard Protective Blend.

In general, I’d give the oils at least a week to note and watch the students’ behavior.  One “off day” might simply be a child having an off day.  But if you see a pattern after several days, you may have to tweak the recipe you use in your classroom.  As mentioned above, you might develop your own morning and afternoon blends. You are looking for the “sweet spot” blend of oils for the unique students in your class.  This may take some experimentation.

I am available to help if you join my team!

What oils “work” for one classroom may be very different from what helps the classroom next door.  And different days may require different combinations of oils. Times of transition … testing … illness… low-energy days … high-energy days … the beauty of using essential oil is that they can be customized to your needs.

My recommendation is to "start out simple" with these three oils -- grow and experiment.  They can be a very powerful support to teachers and students.
