Arborvitae (Thuja plicata) is a needled evergreen that is commonly found around the Pacific Northwest. Known as the “tree of life, ” Arborvitae is majestic in size and abundant in unique benefits. Native to Canada, all parts of the Arborvitae tree were used extensively by Native Americans for health benefits and for building vessels, totem poles, baskets, and clothing. Because of its natural preserving properties, Arborvitae prevents wood from rotting, which makes it popular in woodcraft and for preserving natural wood surfaces.
The essential oil distilled from its woody fibers is sustainably sourced (see the video below), and very high in esters. The oil plays a key role in giving the Giant Arborvitae repellent properties and has an unforgettably fresh, invigorating aroma. It is truly a gift from the earth.
I use Arborvitae mostly as a night-time replacement for our legendary OnGuard (one of our TOP TEN oils). OnGuard is so wonderful for cleansing the air and protecting your immune system, but at night, the spiciness of this blend tends to keep me awake. Arborvitae has the same kinds of properties but is a calming and restful oil! Awesome, right?!?
I like to make my own furniture polish with it too. Here's a link to make your own furniture polish (replace or supplement Wild Orange with Arborvitae). This money-saving DIY wood polish also works well with cleaning and preserving wood floors and helps you to detox your home of chemical-laden cleaners. Use this polish every couple of months; frequently dust in-between with a damp microfiber cloth.
You can make a really nice fresh outdoors-y cologne with Arborvitae essential oil along with Frankincense, Petitgrain and Cedarwood blended with Fractionated Coconut Oil -- no synthetic chemicals!. This will produce a fragrance that uplifts and relaxes the senses.
I love the rich forest-y aroma for diffusing. It blends well with other wood oils like White Fir, Birch, and Cedarwood and also with Petitgrain, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, and Eucalyptus essential oils.
Chemistry of Arborvitae Essential Oil
Main Chemical Components: Methyl thujate, methyl myrtenate, α-terpineol
Arborvitae essential oil is concentrated in tropolones, such as hinokitiol, which are a group of chemical compounds that protect against environmental and seasonal threats and have powerful purifying properties. These compounds also contribute to Arborvitae’s natural insect repellent properties. Thujic acid, another tropolone found in Arborvitae, has been studied for its ability to protect against common threats in the environment. Because of Arborvitae oil’s main chemical properties, it has a strong renewing effect.

Arborvitae essential oil blends well with Birch, Cedarwood, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, and Eucalyptus essential oils for diffusion.
This is my usual nighttime blend for my daughter who has a very complicated airway. Diffusing this overnight supports her body for healthy sleep, plus supports her immune & respiratory system.
